Silvano Cardinal Piovanelli (born February 21, 1924 in Ronta di Mugello , Province of Florence , Italy ; † July 9, 2016 in Florence ) was Archbishop of Florence .

Life

Silvano Piovanelli studied from 1935 for twelve years at the seminary in Florence and received the sacrament of ordination in 1947 . He then worked for a year as curate and secretary before he was appointed sub-rain of the Florentine Boys' College in 1948 . From 1960 to 1979 he worked as a pastor in Castelfiorentino , where he was particularly committed to the social issues of the workers. In 1979 the Archbishop of Florence Giovanni Cardinal Benelli appointed him Vicar General . Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness on December 4 of the same year .

On May 28, 1982 he was appointed titular bishop of Tubunae in Mauretania and auxiliary bishop in Florence by John Paul II . The Florentine Archbishop Giovanni Benelli donated him the episcopal ordination on June 24th of the same year. Co- consecrators were the former bishop of Fiesole , Antonio Bagnoli , and the bishop of Pescia , Giovanni Bianchi .

After the sudden death of Cardinal Benellis, Pope John Paul II appointed him to his successor as Archbishop of Florence on March 18, 1983, and accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria delle Grazie a Via Trionfale in the College of Cardinals on May 25, 1985 . In 1990 Cardinal Piovanelli became Vice President of the Italian Bishops' Conference , which he remained until 1995. From 1985 to 2001 he was also President of the Regional Episcopal Conference of Tuscany. Piovanelli headed the Archdiocese of Florence until his retirement in 2001.

At the 2005 conclave , in which Pope Benedict XVI. was elected, and he did not take part in the 2013 conclave , in which Pope Francis was elected, because at that point in time he had already exceeded the maximum age of 80 years for active papal election . He last lived in a church convict in Florence, where he died in July 2016 after a serious illness.
