The metropolitan city of Florence ( Italian Città Metropolitana di Firenze ) is a metropolitan city in the Italian region of Tuscany .
The metropolitan city of Florence has existed since January 1, 2015 as the legal successor to the former Province of Florence ( Italian Provincia di Firenze ).
It has 1,004,298 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in 41 municipalities on an area of 3,514 km². The capital is Florence .
The metropolitan city borders in the north on Emilia-Romagna , in the east on the province of Arezzo , in the south-east on the province of Siena , in the south-west on the province of Pisa and in the north-west on the provinces of Lucca , Pistoia and Prato .
