Edgard Marie Raymond Rouleau (born June 4, 1904 in Brussels , Belgium , † December 11, 1981 in Paris , France ) was a Belgian actor and director with his main field of activity in France.

Live and act

Rouleau attended the Conservatory of his hometown Brussels at the age of 14 and then went to Paris, where he began to play theater in the 1920s. He has been seen in numerous classical and modern roles; In five decades, from 1931 to his death in 1981, Rouleau also repeatedly switched to directing and staged an abundance of plays at various Parisian venues. On Broadway in New York in the winter of 1951/52 he directed Colette's Gigi at the Fulton Theater with Audrey Hepburn in the title role. Rouleau not only worked in classic spoken theater such as Arthur Miller's witch hunt with Yves Montand - a play that he adapted for cinema in 1956 with the same leading actor in collaboration with DEFA in Potsdam - Babelsberg - but also the opera " Carmen " and a " Holiday " on Ice "-Revue.

In the cinema, where Raymond Rouleau made his debut in a late silent film with Brigitte Helm - his appearance in Marcel L'Herbier's Money! Money!! Money !!! Fell victim to the scissors - from 1930, Rouleau found regular employment. Initially, in numerous pre-war films, he was given roles of youthful heroes and lovers and thus developed into a half-star of French cinema. Rouleau made the transition to the character subject during the Second World War without major problems. Since directing the film for Die Hexen von Salem , Raymond Rouleau concentrated more on his theatrical activities - directing as well as acting - and neglected the film business. His last artistic work was the staging and adaptation of Émile Zola's Thérèse Raquin for the Théâtre de Boulogne-Billancourt in 1981 .
