action
The banker Nicolas Saccard finances companies and operates as a stock market speculator. When his main business ran into financial difficulties, he was brought to the brink of ruin by his rival, the banker Gunderman. He sees his only chance of driving the price of his shares back up in the fact that he finances a lucrative business. He is supporting a transatlantic flight by the aviation pioneer Hamelin, who wants to set up an oil production project in French Guiana .
When the news about Hamelin's crash circulated, Saccard used the false news he recognized to manipulate the company's share price in his favor. In addition, while Hamelin is absent and unsuspecting, he tries to seduce his wife. Gunderman and Baroness Sandorf, a former lover of Saccard, see through Saccard's actions and disapprove of the unethical speculation. Gunderman has secretly acquired shares in Bank Saccards for his bank and uses them as leverage against Saccard. Sandorf convinces Line Hamelin to file charges against Saccard. He ends up in prison, but is already planning a new financial coup there.
Reviews
“A silent film based on a novel by Emile Zola, the story of which seems astonishingly topical and which denounces financial conduct aimed at profit at all costs. The lavishly equipped silent film with an original running time of 200 minutes was one of the 'great masterpieces' of its era for Orson Welles. "
