Alessandro Lai

Alessandro Lai (* 1970 in Cagliari , Sardinia) is an Italian costume designer .

Life

After graduating from the Liceo Classico in Cagliari, Lai began studying art history, which he completed with a thesis on the costume designer Piero Tosi and his collaboration with Luchino Visconti . He then got a beginner's job in the Sartoria Tirelli in Fornello (Rome), where he worked for three years and worked as a costume designer a. a. was trained by Piero Tosi, Gabriella Pescucci and Maurizio Millenotti .

As a costume designer, he has worked with a number of renowned directors, including a. with Franco Zeffirelli , Francesca Archibugi , Liliana Cavani , Cristina Comencini , Roberta Torre and in a total of seven films with Ferzan Özpetek .

Since 2000 he has been working regularly as a costume designer for the opera. In 2000 and 2009 he created the costumes for Carmen in productions by the Belgian-French choreographer and opera director Micha van Hoecke (* 1944). Since 2016 he has designed costumes for productions of the Mariinsky Theater several times : Simon Boccanegra (2016), Falstaff (2018) and Lucia di Lammermoor (2018). He was the costume designer for the Italian television series The Medici Rulers of Florence and Medici: The Magnificent.

Prizes and awards

Lai has received 5 film awards, including twice the Nastro d'Argento , and was nominated for 18 more, including six times for the Donatello .
