Carlos Martínez (born September 30, 1955 in Pravia , Asturias ) is a Spanish pantomime .

Live and act

For more than 35 years, the mime Carlos Martínez has been traveling the world with his solo programs. Thanks to his universal language, pantomime, the Spaniard has a special talent for quickly establishing contact with people of all origins.

He has lived in Barcelona since he was 12 , where he soon joined an amateur theater group and discovered his love for the theater . In 1980 he attended the mime school Taller de Mimo y Teatro Contemporaneo and in 1981 he moved to the drama school El Timbal . From 1982 to 1987 he studied with teachers such as Manuel Carlos Lillo and Jorge Vera . Carlos has been working professionally as a mime since 1986, creating a world of gestures that combine his Mediterranean temperament and humor with precise technique and rhythm. This very personal language is universal and has given him the freedom to perform not only in Spain, but all over the world.

Carlos is constantly exploring the boundaries of silence by designing his own new pieces as well as developing new themed pieces for specific occasions, congresses and trade fairs. Sketches of Silence is a collection of his most popular pieces that has now become a trademark. Other programs such as Books without Words or Hand Made are also well received. Both programs won the audience award at renowned theater festivals in Portugal: Hand Made in June 2004 at the international theater festival “Almada” and Books without Words in August 2009 at the 5th international TeatroAgosto Festival in Fundão.

The program Meine Bibel , which was shown in countless church parishes throughout the German-speaking area, offers a fresh approach to the "old" stories and was very enthusiastic. In 2002 Carlos Martínez was awarded with this program by the ecumenical foundation Bible and Culture based in Stuttgart . This foundation, supported by the German Bible Society , the Protestant regional churches and the Catholic dioceses , was established in 1987 to strengthen the importance of the Bible in cultural and spiritual life.

Inspired by a project with the Zahori Theater Company , Carlos Martínez decided next to develop the topic of " human rights " as a pantomime program for the stage. In February 2004, Human Rights premiered in Geneva . Despite this challenging topic, he managed to combine depth, provocation and humor.

At the same time, his first DVD, My Bible, was released . In September 2005, DVD number 2 ( Human Rights ) followed with its program on " Human Rights ". He performed with excerpts from this program at the Amnesty International Human Rights Awards ceremony on March 19, 2006 at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin. Among the guests of the evening were u. a. Federal President Horst Köhler, Herbert Grönemeyer, Dominique Horwitz and Franka Potente. In November 2006 the "Human Rights" production was nominated for the Adam Award of the international Sabaoth film festival in Milan (category: Feature Documentary). The 3rd DVD ("HAND MADE") by Carlos Martínez will be published by Brunnen Verlag (Giessen) in time for the start of 2007, in which he will celebrate his 25th stage anniversary as a pantomime.

In 2005 and 2008 he toured Germany with the German journalist Andreas Malessa with the “Still & Stark” program. The program presents basic human experiences in 25 compact pieces with the help of the polarity of speaking and silence. The American Robert Long directed this production.

As a theater teacher, Carlos was involved in founding several theater groups. He taught pantomime in public schools. He also teaches regularly as a mime teacher at the University of Saragossa and at international artist seminars.

Carlos wrote over 100 skits for pantomime and theater. His first pantomime manual In Silence (Stille Kunst, 1992) was published in Spanish , German and French . His second book Word of Mime (pantomime word , 1995) was published in French and German. In August 2009 the book “Ungeschminkte Weisheiten” will appear in German-speaking bookshops. The subtitle is “From the wardrobe of life” and tells short stories from the artist's wardrobe. In the summer of 2011 the English edition ("From the Dressing Room") and the Spanish edition ("Desde el camerino") of the book were published. "Books without words", the show, which won the audience award at the 5th TeatroAgosto Festival in Fundão (Portugal) in August 2009, was released on the German market in November 2012 as the 4th DVD by Carlos Martínez

In 2012 the mime celebrated his 30th stage anniversary with his show "Fata Morgana".

At the invitation of the Swiss festival “Boswiler Sommer”, Carlos Martínez made his first joint appearance in 2013 with the French concert pianist Shani Diluka . Due to the positive feedback on combining classical music with classical pantomime, the two artists created the “Classical!” Program.

In 2014, Carlos Martínez was commissioned by the Swiss Red Cross to present the seven Red Cross principles of neutrality, humanity, impartiality, independence, voluntariness, unity and universality in pantomime pieces in order to make them tangible and tangible for employees and volunteers. In the same year Carlos Martínez received the plaque of the city of Amman from HRH Princess Muna al-Hussein at a gala event in Amman, Jordan .

In the summer of 2015, the actor was honored by an organization in his home region of Asturias . In June the "European Forum Cum Laude" in Oviedo presented him with a gold medal for his cultural work.

Since the beginning of his artistic career, Carlos Martínez has created pantomimes based on characters and texts from the Bible - first “Psalm 23”, then “The Creation”, “Noah”, “The Three Wise Men” and “The Last Supper”. The selection of pieces is steadily expanding into a full-length work entitled “My Bible”. This will appear for the first time as a complete program in 2016 as a DVD in German-language bookstores under the title "Still My Bible (My Bible - My Stories)". On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation , he toured increasingly in Germany and Europe with the show "My Bible".

In December 2017 the association " World Mime Organization ", based in Belgrade, presented Carlos Martínez with the WMO Award for his outstanding contribution to the art of mime.

This was followed in 2019 by two tours through Germany and Switzerland with the German songwriter Jürgen Werth under the title "And the ears will make eyes".

After the hardcover book "Ungeschminkte Weisheiten", published in 2009, the book "Der Poet der Stille" (Brunnen Verlag), in which Martínez shares 26 personal stories, followed in February 2020.
