Muna al-Hussein (real name Antoinette "Toni" Avril Gardiner , born April 25, 1941 in Chelmondiston , Suffolk , England ) is the mother of King Abdullah II of Jordan . Until her divorce on December 21, 1972, she was the second wife of Hussein I of Jordan.

Life

The daughter of the British officer Walter Percy Gardiner and his wife Doris (née Sutton) was born in England and grew up there in what is now Malaysia . She attended Bourbe School in Kuala Lumpur and was an excellent hockey player. When she was working as an assistant on the Lawrence of Arabia film set , she met King Hussein, who was inspecting his troops, who were acting as extras.

On May 25, 1961, she married King Hussein in Amman . She converted to Islam and took the name Muna al-Hussein . After the birth of her first son, she received the title of Royal Highness Princess Muna al-Hussein . She had four children with the king:

Like a large part of the royal family, Princess Muna al-Hussein is a radio amateur with the amateur radio call sign JY2. Their licensing is seen as a political rally to empower women in Arab society.

She was divorced on December 21, 1972. She was allowed to keep her title and she stayed in Jordan.
