Time of the Butterflies ( In the Time of the Butterflies ) is a US-American - Mexican television movie about the Mirabal sisters from the year 2001 . Directed by Mariano Barroso , the script was written by David Klass and Judy Klass based on a novel by Julia Álvarez .

action

The action takes place in the time of the Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo . Minerva Mirabal and her sisters join the resistance movement against Trujillo. Minerva follows her first love, the revolutionary Lio. The group calls themselves butterflies .

The sisters visit their arrested husbands in November 1960. They are abducted, beaten and killed after visiting the prison.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was a “ film adaptation of a bestseller from the 1990s ”, which “portrayed the true story in an emotionally pointed way ” and “ focused on the main character ”. It is a " solid (television) production according to common patterns, played convincingly ".

Awards

Salma Hayek and the film for Best TV Feature won the ALMA Award in 2002 ; Marc Anthony was nominated for the same award. Salma Hayek was nominated for the Broadcast Film Critics Association Award in 2002.
