action

Freyr, a doctor in a town in Iceland , helps local police when an elderly woman is found hanged in an old church. Crosses are carved on her back, presumably due to abuse, but the dead man's husband swears he never mistreated her. The policewoman Dagny then linked the death with the mysterious disappearance of a little boy, Bernódus, which happened decades earlier. Dagny shows him a photo of Bernódu's classmates with eight faces scratched out with crosses. She explains that the classmates were known to harass Bernódus, whose back similar crosses were carved by his ultra-religious, abusive father (who blamed him for his wife's death in childbirth). Six of the eight have already been killed in mysterious accidents and all six have been found with crosses in their backs. Freyr, still suffering from the unsolved disappearance of his own son Benni, begins to see visions of Bernódus.

In the second storyline, the couple Katrin and Garðar move to a small, abandoned town with Katrin's best friend Líf to convert an old abandoned house into a hostel. While exploring the area, Katrin stumbles upon an old cemetery where one of the tombstones is missing. She starts seeing paranormal incidents in the area such as: B. Hearing Bernódus ghost near the creek along with the missing tombstone and strange noises in the house that made her fall down the stairs and twist her foot. Due to the lack of cell phone reception, the group cannot call for help. Katrin also ventures into the basement of the house, where she finds Bernódus' body, which bears a picture of his mother who resembles Katrin. The group is shocked by the discovery, but still cannot come into contact with others. Katrin refuses to stay in the house any longer and they move to another vacant house nearby.

Freyr continues to experience his own strange incidents. Benni's autistic friend only reveals that Benni was last seen in a "green submarine ". The seventh torturer of Bernódus is found dead after attempting suicide , and Freyr finds dozens of newspaper clippings about Benni's disappearance in one of his rooms. Freyr also learns that the eighth tormentor was Úrsúla, a woman he knows with schizophrenia . An angry Úrsúla tells him that Benni is “at the bottom” of “something green”, but Freyr cannot get more out of her. A clairvoyant who claims to be in contact with Benni's ghost gives him similar information. Meanwhile, Katrin learns that Garðar and Líf had an affair during their estrangement, which hurts them very much. Garðar and Líf are still in love, and while Katrin is away, they plan to go away together and leave Katrin. They are apparently attacked by a young boy who throws a stone through their window before running to a nearby whale house. Garðar and Líf run after him and meet Bernódus' ghost, whereupon the chimney of Hausen collapses above them. Katrin discovers Garðar dead and Líf fatally wounded. Katrin runs up a mountain to get help with the help of Lífs cell phones. But she discovers that Líf von Garðar is pregnant and the two planned to run away together. Thereupon she goes back to the house without fetching help and lies down in the cellar with Bernódu's body.

Freyr wakes up in the middle of the night and goes jogging, where he sees Bernódus ghost again and pursues him. Bernódus leads him to a captured Úrsúla who claims that Bernódus is always with her; she reveals that she was the last to see him before he disappeared. See saw him hiding in a boat and kept this observation a secret for decades. Bernódus took the boat to the deserted village with his mother's grave, whose tombstone Katrin discovered; he wandered alone through the empty house before lying down in the basement to die. Meanwhile, Benni's friend draws a green submarine, which his mother sends to Dagny. In a moment of clarity, Dagny realizes that what he is describing is not a submarine but a septic tank . She examines the footage of the gas station where Benni was last seen, and the footage shows Katrin, Garðar and Líf. They had a septic tank with them to renovate the house.

It turns out that Katrin, Garðar and Líf's storyline took place years earlier. Garðar and Líf's bodies were discovered, but Katrin was never found. Dagny suspects that Benni crawled into the green septic tank at the gas station and drowned while the three of them were inside eating something. They make their way to the abandoned house, where Benni's body is found in the septic tank. Freyr sits in the house, devastated but finally certain. Something pulls him into the cellar, where the bodies of Katrin and Bernódus are, but he closes the door without looking inside. He walks away with Benni's body while the ghosts of Katrin and Bernódus look on sadly through the window, holding hands.
