occupation

Ex Drummer is a Belgian drama from 2007. It is the first feature film from Koen Mortier , who directed and wrote the screenplay . The film is based on the book by the Flemish author Herman Brusselmans .

action

One day three demolished figures from the slums of Ostend turn up at the successful writer and formerly active drummer Dries in order to hire him as a drummer for their band project, which had not been very successful until then. The first goal is a one-off appearance with a band of exclusively disabled musicians at the (provincial) rock competition in Leffinge . As there are: Koen de Geyter, the lisping singer, whose leisure activity is to assault women and beat them bloody in order to gain satisfaction, Jan Verbeek, the bassist with the stiff right arm who has to " look after " his father at home, who is tied to the bed with a straitjacket, and the deaf guitarist Ivan Van Dorpe, in whose home the listless wife lets the house and her own body go to waste and at best sedates the screaming daughter with drugs. Dries agrees, driven by the urge to observe the social misery, indicates as his handicap that he cannot play the drums, and calls the band "The Feminists". Dries manipulates the world of the anti-social , exploits them against each other and finally he thinks himself as a savior and causes a catastrophe.

criticism

"The visually and linguistically drastic representation of social misery is not understood as realism, but as a reflection on the representability of hopeless ways of life, artfully broken down both by the main character and by stylizations on the image and sound level."

“It hurts to get involved in this film, but the pain is always a healing experience. And that applies even more to ex drummer, who is sure to be one of the most startling and disturbing films of the year. Nevertheless - or perhaps because of it - you definitely shouldn't miss this film - if you can stand it. "

- cinema time

"Director Koen Mortier probably wanted to create a similar scandalous social drama such as" Trainspotting ", but only created a work between delirium, disgust and disgust that apparently tries to break every taboo."
