Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death) is the fourth album by the American alternative rock - / alternative metal - band Marilyn Manson . It was published on November 14, 2000.

background

Holy Wood is Marilyn Manson's first album after the school massacre in Littleton on April 20, 1999. The media and politicians accused the band, and especially Brian Hugh Warner , of having inspired the two gunmen Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold to act. The song lyrics on the album deal with the role of parents, the values, the culture of conservative America and the media game around the event.

The lyrics also describe the infatuation of US society with weapons , religion and the fame that one tries to achieve through the US media - based on violence, death and martyrdom . Manson said in an interview that over 200 songs were written during the production of the album, and only a few ultimately appeared on the album.

Cultural references

This album deals with greats like John F. Kennedy , John Lennon and other glorious martyrs of US culture who died too soon. The album responds to the Columbine massacre and the path of two confused, misunderstood teenagers who wanted just 15 minutes of fame. Manson highlighted the irony that the media would rock the incident for months. In his opinion, the media show tragic deaths as entertainment for the general public. In 2004 Manson wrote an article for Rolling Stone music magazine . He explained the role the media plays in reviving dead characters in music and that the song "Lamb of God" is in the spirit of Kurt Cobain and Jim Morrison :

“If you die when there's no one watching,
Then your ratings drop and you're forgotten.
But if they kill you on the TV,
You're a martyr and a lamb of God. "

- Lamb of God

"The Nobodies" seems to interfere with the fact that the two gunmen felt like they were nothing:

“We are the nobodies, wanna be somebodies.
When we're dead, they'll know just who we are.
[…]
Some children died the other day;
We fed machines and then we prayed.
Puked up and down in morbid faith;
You should have seen the ratings that day. "

- The Nobodies

In “The Love Song” Manson gives his opinion on the three main cores of the conservative culture of Central America: “ Guns, God and the Government ” (German: “Arms, God and the Government”). He describes a metaphorical connection between man and weapon: the arm as the father, the mother as the pistol and the child as the bullet.

Comments from Marilyn Manson

“The two main themes on the record are revolution and evolution . I am trying to investigate why people behave the way they do. What I learned from this record is that you can only revolutionize yourself. "

- Brian Hugh Warner : October 2000

"The album title is based on the film" Santa Sangre "by Alejandro Jodorowsky - whose work I adore. The album will conclude a trilogy that began with Antichrist Superstar and Mechanical Animals . It was originally supposed to come out together with a book and a film by Jodorowsky, but don't worry, the project is not out of the world yet. "

- Brian Hugh Warner : July 2000

concept

Holy Wood is a discographic sequel to the albums Mechanical Animals and Antichrist Superstar . The main character is Adam Kadmon, who has already manifested himself as "Omega" in Mechanical Animals and "The Worm / Antichrist Superstar" in Antichrist Superstar .

The character Coma White corresponds to "Coma Black" in this album. The story follows Adam as he leads the people of Valley of Death - where the world's most rejected - in a revolution against Holy Wood, home of the beautiful and famous. The revolution succeeds, but the population gradually adjusts to old Holy Wood, which leads to Adam's suicide attempt and the start of the Mechanical Animals storyline.
