Charles Petrie

Sir Charles Alexander Petrie, 3rd Baronet (born September 28, 1895 in Liverpool , † December 13, 1977 ) was a British historian .

He has written several works on British, Jacobite and Spanish history. In the 30s he sympathized with the fascists around Oswald Mosley , Franco supporter. He was a supporter of Chamberlain 's policies of appeasement , editor of the conservative New English Review , corresponding member of the Spanish Historical Society and President of the Irish Military Historical Society.

In 1927, on the death of his older brother Edward Petrie, he inherited the title of baronet , created in 1918 for his father Sir Charles Petrie , of Carrowcarden in the County of Sligo.

From his first marriage to Ursula Dowdall, which was closed in 1920 and divorced in 1926, he had a son, Charles Petrie (1921–1988), who succeeded him in 1977 as 4th Baronet. From his second marriage to Jessie Mason in 1926, he had another son, Peter Petrie (* 1932), who followed his childless half-brother in 1988 as the 5th baronet.
