Before the Flood (Before the Flood (Music from the Motion Picture)) is the soundtrack to the film of the same name by director Fisher Stevens and was created in a joint project by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross , the band Mogwai and Gustavo Santaolalla . The soundtrack includes 18 songs and was released on October 21, 2016.

The soundtrack was created in a joint project by several renowned, international artists, all of whom were previously known for their work and have received numerous awards for this. The artists included the American musician Trent Reznor and the English musician Atticus Ross , who had jointly founded the band How to Destroy Angels and before that also worked together on the music project Nine Inch Nails , including the concept album Year Zero , the one dystopian society in 2022. Reznor and Ross composed the soundtrack for the film The Social Network by David Fincher , for which they rearranged, among others, In the Hall of the Mountain King by Edvard Grieg . For this work they were awarded an Oscar and the Golden Globe Award in 2011 . Reznor and Ross's score for Gone Girl from 2014 was also nominated for the Golden Globes.

The British post-rock band Mogwai , who most recently wrote the soundtrack for Mark Cousins' documentary Atomic: Living in Dread and Promise , was also involved, as was the Argentinian composer Gustavo Santaolalla , who is considered a pioneer of rock en Español, a musical genre where rock and Latin American rhythms merge and who was voted one of the 25 Most Influential Latin Americans in America by Time Magazine in 2005. In 2006 Santaolalla won the Oscar for best film composer for the country-oriented film music he created for Brokeback Mountain by Ang Lee and in 2007 for the film music for Babel by Alejandro González Iñárritu .

In a first step, the artists worked independently of each other and were guided by their feelings and instincts. In the next step, they exchanged the unfinished titles created in this way for revision, had them expanded, reprocessed and reinterpreted if they considered it necessary or useful.

The film Before the Flood itself premiered on September 9, 2016 at the Toronto International Film Festival . The soundtrack for the film includes 18 songs and was released on October 21, 2016.

Mihnea Manduteanu says the styles of the four composers complement each other very well and combine well. Everything fits, everything is placed correctly, the soundtrack sounds silky and is pleasant to hear.

As part of the Hollywood Music In Media Awards 2016 were Trent Reznor , Atticus Ross , Gustavo Santaolalla and Mogwai together in the category for her work Best Original Score nomination of a documentation film and Reznor and Ross also for the song A Minute to Breathe in the category Best Song Award . In December 2016, the song was included in the list of candidates (longlist) at the Academy Awards 2017 in the category Best Film Song , from which the members of the Academy will determine the official nominations.

Singles and chart successes

Reznor released the song A Minute to Breathe on October 7, 2016 . According to his own statements, Reznor sang the song in a voice that he had never sung before.

The soundtrack entered the iTune soundtrack charts at number 18 after its release in October 2016. and reached number 41 on the album charts at the same time. On 28 October 2016, the soundtrack debuted at number 19 in the soundtrack album charts in the UK and the following week at number 9 in the US Billboard Soundtrack album chart one.
