Wayne Cochran

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wayne Cochran (born May 10, 1939 in Thomaston , Georgia , † November 21, 2017 in Miramar , Florida ) was an American soul singer.

Life

His musical career began in 1955 with the formation of his first band. After moving to Macon , Georgia, and after numerous membership changes, he became known as Wayne Cochran & the CC Riders. Influenced by James Brown and his extensive tours, he bought a bus and went on tour. They performed throughout the south and southwest of the United States before settling in Miami and becoming the Barn's (aka The House of Soul) house band. Wayne Cochran also became known for his unusual stage clothes and eye-catching hairstyle.

He recorded the first record in 1959. Others followed, in which female first names were often in the title (Liza Jane, Linda Lu, Cindy Marie). The best known number he wrote and recorded was Last Kiss, but his own interpretation was unsuccessful; only in the version by J. Frank Wilson & the Cavaliers did it reach number 2 on the pop charts.

His excessive touring and singing in the highest notes made his voice disappear more and more. After great personal difficulties, he became a resurrected Christian in 1981 and was then a preacher in Miami. On July 26th and August 1st, 2001 Wayne Cochran & the CC Riders performed together again in Miami and Hollywood, Florida, respectively.
