history

Emeryville was founded on December 2, 1896. The city was named after Joseph Stickney Emery , who came during the California gold rush and bought large pieces of land in the area. In 1884, Emery was president of a narrow-gauge railway called the California and Nevada Railroad . The original intention was to build a railroad from Oakland to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the gold rush town of Bodie . However, only one line was built to Orinda and the rights of way were eventually sold to the Santa Fe Railway . This eventually built a railroad station between 41st Street and Yerba Buena Avenue. Although the station, which opened in 1902, was in Emeryville, it was called "Oakland".

In the early 20th century, Emeryville was known for its numerous gambling halls and brothels. The then District Attorney of Alameda County and later Governor of California and Chief Justice of the United States Earl Warren once called Emeryville "the rottenest city on the Pacific Coast" (German: the worst city on the Pacific coast ). There were also numerous speakeasys in Emeryville during Prohibition .

After the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 , a new Amtrak station was built in Emeryville to replace the old 16th Street station in West Oakland, which had deteriorated before the severe damage caused by the earthquake. In 2001, the Bay Street Emeryville shopping center with over 70 stores and 37,000 m² of retail space was completed.
