Seeqpod was an Internet search engine for audio and video files. It searched the entire Internet and provided the links to the content they were looking for. However, the files were not directly downloadable. The user could put together playlists, save them and call them up later.

History and background

SeeqPod's search and recommendation technology was anchored through a biomimetic algorithm originally developed at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab under the name GenoPharm.

GenoPharm's algorithm mimicked the way a biologist looks for links between genes in the biomedical literature. The system, designed to serve as an add-on to a biological brain, enables researchers to find indirect links between genes and therapies that have never been noticed before. This sped up the research process and enabled biologists to do in minutes what would normally have taken days.

The record companies Warner Music Group , Elektra Records and Rhino Records filed a lawsuit against SeeqPod for copyright infringement in early 2008. Although the basic concept of the platform is to optically process the media that can be found using the Google search engine and make them available in playlists, the legal side of this concept is controversial.

On April 1, 2009, SeeqPod filed for bankruptcy protection due to the economic conditions and legal disputes. As of April 24, 2009, SeeqPod is no longer accessible via the Internet, but only offered an API for developers, since December 2011 the SeeqPod service is no longer available.

In April 2010, Bloson is said to have taken over the SeeqPod domain and the contact information of its user base, which corresponds to around 4 million users.

Legal controversy

Although the Internet site did not offer any options for downloading the content, with a little expertise or suitable software it was possible for the user to access the audio and video files and save them locally.

use

The music search using SeeqPod is, among other things, integrated in Amarok from version 2.0 and available as an add-on for Songbird from version 1.0.

Award

In 2008 SeeqPod received the R&D 100 Award 2008 in the software category from R&D Magazine.
