Songbird ( English for songbird ) is expandable, free software for the organization and playback of media that are on the local computer or on the Internet . At the same time, Songbird is a platform for Internet applications, such as Internet music distributors or network labels, by providing an open programming interface. Songbird is produced by POTI, Inc. ( " P ioneers O f T he I nevitable" , English for pioneers of the inevitable , a group consisting of former developers of Winamp and the Yahoo Music Engine ), under the terms of the GNU General Public License ( GPL). Songbird is based on Mozilla's XUL and the desktop version currently runs on Windows and macOS . GStreamer is used for media playback .
Official support for Linux ended with version 1.7.2. In mid-2013 it was announced that the Songbird project would no longer be continued and that development would be discontinued.
Functions
Songbird tries to combine music with the advantages of the internet. The many links to music projects are particularly striking. If there is an audio file on such a page, Songbird will automatically create a web playlist that can play that file. Thanks to Web 2.0 , Songbird is not just an audio player, but also a kind of music browser. In addition to the free blogs , download sites and music services, there are also links to paid music services, including eMusic , CDBaby and Insound .
The main menu is kept relatively simple: In addition to the usual functions such as play, pause, track jump and volume, Songbird also offers a database for media management and the option of transferring tracks to devices. As a special feature, Songbird has a playback function for AAC files (via the QuickTime add-on module) and WMA files (via the Windows Media module) and offers support for transferring files to the Apple iPod ("iPod Device Manager").
In addition in the surface ( GUI preset) Language English can, other languages can be selected via the "File" and "Save".
Extensions
A special feature that is simplified by using XUL is the expansion of the existing functions with add-ons . Well-known extensions are: Qloud Tagging & Search, eMusic Integration, iTunes Importer, iPod Device, Artist Tracker, Library File Organizer, Last.fm , Wikipedia Artist Display, SHOUTcast Radio Directory, UnPlug, Adblock Plus , TagLib metadata handler, Minimize-to- System tray and ChatZilla .
Skins
In Songbird, skins are referred to as "feathers". Users and artists have the option of changing the appearance of Songbird via an extension. In this case, CSS (and optionally XUL ) are used for design. With an image editing program such as Adobe Photoshop or GIMP , users are then able to customize the look of Songbird to their liking.
Localizations
There are currently 49 localizations of Songbird in various stages based on volunteer translators. Songbird encourages developers of all languages to help develop and update localizations.

Special versions and spin-offs
Songbird Mobile
Since the beginning of 2011 there has also been a smartphone version for Android , also developed by POTI , whose touchscreen- optimized user interface differs significantly from the desktop version. Songbird for Android is currently available in version 2.2.2.
Nightingale
As was announced in April 2010 that Songbird would be deprecated as of version 1.8 for Linux, was working on a Fork called Nightingale (English Nightingale started). The first beta version (Nightingale 1.8.1.) Was released on December 15, 2011, and Nightingale 1.11.0, the first official version for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows, was made available for download on March 5, 2012.
