from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

eMusic is an online music service based in New York . The company has existed since January 1998, works with subscription models and sells its music exclusively in the form of MP3 files, which are not restricted in their usability by DRM measures.

eMusic had the second largest online music market share in the United States in 2006. More than 200 million MP3 files have been sold through eMusic since 2003, at the current rate of seven million per month. The music service had 400,000 subscribers in 2008.

The “Big Four” music labels Sony BMG , EMI , Universal and Warner have not yet licensed any music to emusic due to the lack of DRM, but have licensed more than 40,000 independent labels , which is why the focus on indie rock , indie pop , punk rock , jazz and classical music lies. In total, more than four million songs are currently on offer.
