Morgion was a Gothic Metal and Death Doom band from Orange County , which was formed in 1990.

history

occupation

Morgion was founded by guitarists Dwayne Boardman and Mike Davis, singer and bassist Jeremy Peto, and drummer Rhett Davis. In addition to various line-up changes, which were often short-lived, Morgion was dissolved and reformed several times until their last separation in 2013. After dissolutions in 1999, 2004 and 2008, Morgion reformed in 2002, 2008 and 2011 until the last dissolution in 2013. The dissolution in 1999 arose out of disagreement about a tour and the future musical direction of the group. In 2004 Morgion stopped their activities again, but Boardman, Griffith and Justin Christian, who had replaced Peto as bassist at Morgion from 2002 to 2004, founded the group DustFlow, which never appeared with official releases. The narrow reunion in 2008 meanwhile served isolated concerts, which by Morgion to promote a compilation published by Relapse . Despite the frequent changes of additional keyboardists and guitarists, Boardman, Peto, Davis and keyboardist Gary Griffith are considered to be a solid band constellation. After Griffith joined the band in 1995 as a keyboardist, he gradually took over parts of the vocals and as a guitarist. After Peto's temporary departure in 2001, Griffith and Boardman shared the vocals. While Griffith took over the guttural vocals , Boardman contributed, as before, contrasting clean vocals. With the band's reunion in 2011, Peto returned as bassist and lead singer.

Career

After the group had formed in 1990 and had released two demo tapes in the following years, the band's first official single, Travesty , was released in 1993 . This was followed by a phase of four years with no further publications. In 1997 the debut album Among Majestic Ruin was released via Relapse Records , which was responsible for popular death doom appearances with releases by Amorphis and Disembowelment in the early 1990s. The album was received mostly positively. Two years later, Solinari and the EP Oceans Without Shores followed , the last release before the group's first breakup. The album in particular is considered a classic somewhere between Gothic Metal and Death Doom, but was not able to achieve the commercial success of comparable groups despite praising reviews. The following years were marked by separations and line-up changes. After their reunion in 2002, several demo tapes were initially released until the album Cloaked by Ages, Crowned in Earth was released via Dark Symphonies in 2004 . The album was again positively received, while the change of singer was still criticized by some reviewers. After a new breakup, no new releases by the band appeared. For the release of the two albums released via Relapse as The Relapse Collection , the band was reactivated at short notice, but limited itself to a few appearances. The second reunion was accompanied by the release of the compilation God of Death & Disease , which mainly summarized demo recordings.

Cast overview

style

The style played by Morgion is mostly attributed to Death Doom or Gothic Metal. Gothic metal groups such as Anathema , My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost are used as comparables , as well as popular representatives of Death Doom such as Saturnus or Autopsy .

The music is described as "very dark, almost depressed". Slow instrumental passages with a particular emphasis on riffs would dominate the sound, interrupted by keyboard interludes. The vocals of the first two albums are mainly perceived as a growling borrowed from Death Metal , from which the clear vocals of Boardman stand out as a baritone . Sometimes parallels to Brendan Perry from Dead Can Dance are drawn for the clear vocals . On the third studio album, however, the proportion of growling was reduced. The instruments are considered to be "coordinated". The guitar playing is shown to be particularly slow and gigantic. The bass game is described as driving and the drums as powerful. The “very efficiently used” keyboard is assigned “a major role” in the overall sound.
