Saturnus is a Danish doom metal band founded in 1991 under the name Assesino . Until 1996 the band played mainly death metal , but that has changed since a joint concert with My Dying Bride .

Band history

In 1991 lead singer Thomas AG Jensen founded the death metal band Assesino together with bassist Brian Hansen . They find a guitarist and a drummer, but they don't stay with the band for long. The next few years were marked by a lively change of musicians.

In 1993 the band took part in a band competition for the first time and promptly took second place. Shortly thereafter, however, the separation takes place. But Thomas AG Jensen, Brian Hansen and Kim Sindahl find a new drummer with whom Assesino could continue - Jesper Saltoft. But a month later the band's carousel turns again and Kim Sindahl leaves the band. Mikkel Andersen comes for him and a keyboardist is found, Anders Ro Nielsen. The band name is then changed to Saturnus .

In 1994 guitarist Kim Larsen joined them. The music gets a bit more doomy among the new band members, which lays the foundation for the current music of Saturnus . In 1995, Mikkel Andersen left the band almost two years after joining, but remained loyal to the fact that he was still entrusted with the writing of the lyrics. The band plays numerous gigs in Copenhagen with other Danish metal bands.

At the beginning of 1996 the gig of Saturnus takes place, which will define the future musical direction of the band - the concert with the British from My Dying Bride . From then on, the style of Saturnus can be defined as a mixture of Doom and Gothic Metal . At the end of the year, Saturnus signed a contract with the Euphonious Records label , a subsidiary of Voices of Wonder .

In January 1997 the album Paradise Belongs To You comes on the market, which increases the popularity of the formation. Shortly afterwards, the sextet with guitarist Morten Skrubbeltrang is complete again. They play a lot of concerts in the first half of the year, including a. a five-hour concert at St. Stefan's Church on Good Friday . On June 29, 1997, they performed in front of a total of 3000 fans as part of the Roskilde Festival , which was recorded by the Norwegian radio station NRK.

In 1998 the mini CD For The Loveless Lonely Nights was released . In August Morten Skrubbeltrang leaves the band again and is replaced by Peter Poulsen.

In 1999, the hitherto best known album is the band from that in the metal scene relevant known producer Flemming Rasmussen (including Metallica's Ride the Lightning , Master of Puppets and ... And Justice for All was added), which originally published later this year was supposed to be what - as it says on the band's official homepage - "strange reasons" did not happen. In the second half of the year they go on tour again, which must have led to internal disputes, because at the end of the year Kim Larsen, founding member Brian Hansen and Jasper Saltoft leave the band.

In 2000 the band gained new musicians: Morten Plenge on drums, Tais Pedersen on guitar and Peter Heede on bass. On January 10th, the album Martyre, which was produced last year, will finally be released .

After a five-year break, Martyre's successor will be released in May 2006 : Veronika Decides To Die .

After the lineup almost collapsed in 2009 with the exception of Thomas Jensen and Brian Hansen, the new album Saturn in Ascension was released in November 2012 with new band members .
