Stefano Torelli (* 1712 in Bologna , † 1784 in Saint Petersburg ) was a painter from the Italian artist family Torelli who worked in Germany and especially in Russia .

Life

He received his training from his father Felice Torelli , his mother Lucia Casalini , who also paints, and from Francesco Solimena in Naples . In 1740 he was brought to Bayreuth by Wilhelmine von Bayreuth to redesign the Old Palace in the Hermitage . Here he created an allegorical ceiling painting of Chilonis and Cleombrotros for the audience room. A little later he moved on to Saxony, where more works for King August III. Poland and Saxony in the Catholic Court Church (altar Sermon of Saint Benno in Benno Chapel in 1752 and painting of the Blessed Sacrament Chapel 1755) and in the castle Nischwitz find. He also painted rooms in the Dresden Zwinger . He also created the ceiling painting in the marble hall of Martinskirchen Castle and the paintings in Altdöbern Castle .

Torelli lost his job opportunities in Saxony due to the Seven Years' War . He went north with his assistant and student Francesco Gandini (1722–1778), where he decorated the audience hall in Lübeck's town hall in 1761 with ten allegorical paintings. Also in Lübeck he married his daughter Camilla to the city commander Count von Chasôt .

After the separate Prussian-Russian peace , Torelli went to Russia in 1762 , where he became professor at the Art Academy in St. Petersburg and preferred court painter to Empress Catherine II . He was best known for his numerous portraits of personalities of the Russian nobility.
