Lord Dying is an American sludge band from Portland , Oregon that was founded in 2010.

history

The band was formed in 2010 and consisted of guitarist and singer Erik Olson, guitarist Chris Evans, bassist Don Capuano and drummer and singer Jonathan Reid. After a self-titled EP , performances with Unsane , Red Fang , Yob and Valient Thorr followed . This resulted in the 2012 live EP Fall Tour . After that, the band also held gigs outside of the Northwest of the US, where they then played national with Danava , Lecherous Gaze , Black Cobra , Gaza , Witch Mountain , Black Tusk , Down and Ghost . Through the concerts Relapse Records became aware of the group, whereupon they signed a recording contract for the release of several albums with this label. After the debut album was recorded and mixed under the direction of Sanford Parker , it was released in July 2013 under the name Summon the Faithless . Then it went on a national five-week tour with Howl , before another five-week tour with Ramming Speed and Valient Thorr followed. After a first tour as headliners, the band was allowed to appear at Phil Anselmo's Housecore Horror Film Festival in Austin , Texas . After a long break to write new material, in January 2014 they went on a European tour with Red Fang and Shrine . In February the band headlined the US, before another tour of Europe with Red Fang and Shrine was held in March and April. The tour ended with an appearance at the Roadburn Festival . Two weeks before the recording of the next album, Reid left the cast and was replaced by Rob Shaffer. In January 2015, the Toxic Holocaust album Poisoned Altars was released under the direction of Joel Grind . Aaron Beam from Red Fang can then be heard as a guest musician. Then Nickolis Parks was added as the new drummer. In October and November 2016 they went on tour through Europe with Entombed AD and Voivod . In their career, the band also played with Floor and Corrosion of Conformity , among others, and appeared at Scion Rock Fest , Project Pabst and Stumpfest .

style

According to Thom Jurek from Allmusic , the band plays a mix of Sludge, Doom Metal and Thrash Metal . Volkmar Weber from Rock Hard wrote about Summon the Faithless that "broad guitar streams" can be heard on it. The music is comparable to that of sludge groups like Kylesa , Black Cobra or Valient Thorr. The album is "pretty straight and tricky", but it lacks individuality. Wolfgang Liu Kuhn wrote in a later edition of Poisoned Altars that there are similarities with Crowbar , but also with Kylesa and High on Fire . The songs on the album are characterized by sadness and anger. Matthias from Metal.de also reviewed the album and described the music as a tenacious sludge, whereupon one moves musically in the environment of groups like High on Fire, Kylesa, Red Fang and Black Tusk. All in all, the album offers “fat, groovy , nasty Sludge Metal with tortured vocals” and thus seamlessly follows on from its predecessor.
