Black Cobra is a sludge band from San Francisco formed in 2001 .

history

Black Cobra were founded in 2001 by the drummer Rafa Martinez (ex- 16 , ex- Acid King ) and the guitarist and singer Jason Landrian (ex- Cavity ). After the self-published and self-titled debut EP in 2004, the musicians received a contract with the indie label At A Loss Recordings , on which they released the follow-up albums Bestial and Feather and Stone in 2006 and 2007 . While the debut EP was rather poorly received, critics rated the two albums that appeared on At A Loss mostly mediocre. However, some critics specializing in sludge rated the album Bestial in particular as a high-quality release of the genre. Corresponding to such a sub-scene success, the duo performed at the 2007 Roadburn Festival . A hand-signed and numbered DVD of the Roadburn performance was then released. The limited DVD had an edition of 50 copies. In 2009 the band signed a contract with the popular indie label Southern Lord , on which the two albums Chronomega and Invernal were released. Renowned metal producers Billy Anderson and Kurt Ballou were hired to record the two studio albums . Both publications received mostly positive reviews, but Chronomega was mostly rated better than the later Invernal . For the fifth studio album Imperium Simulacra , the band changed the record company again, this time to Season of Mist . Like the previous albums, Imperium Simulacra received mostly positive reviews.

style

Black Cobra's style is described as a sludge with a high proportion of hardcore punk . The limitation of the band line-up to two people is highlighted as a feature as well as the clear hardcore punk portion. On the handwritten-mag website, the conceptual band set is described as “drums, vocals, and guitars tuned to the basement” as “demolition command”. The online magazine Metalnews also highlights the line-up and describes the musical direction as "[energetic] drums with a relentlessly driving, medium-paced double bass [that] meets mangy, no-frills guitar riffs and equally mangy roaring vocals." The drumming becomes particularly hard as well as precisely circumscribed, the singing, on the other hand, is regarded as a throaty grunt and guttural roar. The guitar playing is meanwhile referred to as particularly riff-heavy .
