Revised Romanization : Koseupi jisu
McCune-Reischauer : K'osŭp'i chisu

The KOSPI is a price index in which all corporations of the Korea Exchange (KRX) are listed. It reflects the development of the entire South Korean stock market. The index level is determined solely on the basis of share prices and only adjusted for income from subscription rights and special payments. The weighting is based on the market capitalization of the listed companies. Corporate actions such as stock splits have no (distorting) influence on the index. The calculation is updated every second during KRX trading hours from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. local time (1:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. CET ).

history

20th century

KOSPI 1979-2012

The KOSPI was published for the first time in 1983 and was calculated back to an index value of 89.73 points by December 31, 1975. On August 19, 1987, the leading South Korean index closed at 500.73 points for the first time above the 500 point mark and on March 31, 1989 with 1,003.31 points for the first time above the limit of 1,000 points. On April 1, 1989 the KOSPI stood at 1,007.77 points. The profit since 1975 is 1,023.1 percent.

During the recession in the early 1990s, the index fell by 54.4 percent to August 21, 1992, to a closing level of 459.07 points. The economic recovery caused the KOSPI to rise again in the following three years. On October 14, 1995, the index ended trading at 1,016.77 points. That was an increase of 121.5 percent since August 1992.

The Asian crisis led to a large outflow of capital from South Korea. The KOSPI closed on June 16, 1998 at 280.00 points, its lowest level since January 12, 1987. The loss since October 1995 is 72.5 percent. By January 4, 2000, the index rose to a closing level of 1,059.04 points. That was an increase of 278.2 percent since June 1998.

21st century

On September 12, 2001, the leading South Korean index suffered the largest daily loss in its history with 12.02 percent. The reason was the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 in the USA.

After the speculative bubble burst in the technology sector ( dot-com bubble ), the KOSPI fell to a low of 468.76 points by September 17, 2001. That was a decrease of 55.7 percent since January 2000. September 17, 2001 marked the end of the downward trend. From autumn 2001 the index was on the way up again. On April 9, 2007, the KOSPI closed with 1,501.06 points for the first time above the limit of 1,500 points and on July 25, 2007 with 2,004.22 points for the first time above the 2,000 point mark. On October 31, 2007, the KOSPI marked a record level with a closing level of 2,064.85 points. That was an increase of 340.5 percent since September 2001.

In the course of the international financial crisis , which had its origin in the US real estate crisis in the summer of 2007, the index began to decline again. From the third quarter of 2008, the crisis increasingly affected the real economy. As a result, share prices collapsed worldwide. The KOSPI reached a new low on October 24, 2008, when it ended trading at 938.75 points. This corresponds to a decrease of 54.5 percent since October 31, 2007.

October 24, 2008 marks the turning point of the downward trend. From autumn 2008 the index was on the way up again. On October 30, 2008 KOSPI achieved the largest daily profit in its history with 11.95 percent. On May 2, 2011, the leading South Korean index marked an all-time high with a closing level of 2,228.96 points. The profit since October 2008 is 137.4 percent.

The weakening of the global economy and the worsening of the euro crisis led to a collapse in the price of the South Korean benchmark index. On September 26, 2011 the KOSPI ended trading at 1,652.71 points. The loss since the high on May 2, 2011 is 25.8 percent. A recovery in prices led to increases in value on the stock market. On April 3, 2012, the index closed at 2,049.28 points, 24.0 percent higher than six months earlier.
