Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional de Honduras

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional de Honduras is the top division of football in Honduras . The league plays according to the Latin American system Apertura and Clausura with ten teams.

In the 1930s, football saw a surge in popularity in Honduras. In 1948 the Liga Mayor de Fútbol Francisco Morazán , named after the department around the Honduran capital Tegucigalpa (→ Departamento Francisco Morazán ), was created.

CD Olimpia , CD Federal , CD Motagua , Argentina and Real CD España were among others. a. the first clubs to play in the new league. In 1948 the first championship was played in the recently opened Estadio Tiburcio Carías Andino . The winner was the Club Deportivo Victoria; three years later, in 1951, they repeated this success. Due to the high level of support from the league, the Federación Deportiva Extraescolar de Honduras , a general national sports association, was founded during this period , from which specialized associations such as today's national football association, Federación Nacional Autónoma de Fútbol de Honduras (FENAFUTH), emerged.

Today's league was founded in 1965. Since the 1997/98 season, the season has been divided into Apertura and Clausura. In addition to the two capital city clubs CD Olimpia and CD Motagua , Real CD España and CD Marathón , both from San Pedro Sula , and CDS Vida , from La Ceiba , are founding members of the league. They are the only clubs that have never been relegated.
