history

The complex, often called Estadio Tiburcio Carías Andino after the former President of Honduras, Tiburcio Carías Andino , was built in 1948 during his tenure. It was inaugurated on March 15, 1948 with a baseball match between Honduras and Cuba . A short time later, the venue was used for a four-nation tournament for the national teams of Honduras , Guatemala , Costa Rica and Panama . To this day, a number of Central American football tournaments have taken place here, such as the CONCACAF Nations Cup in 1967 , 1981 , 1985 and 1989 or the athletics competitions and football games of the Central American Games in 1990. In November 1981, the CONCACAF Nations Cup , which also took place here served as a qualification for the Soccer World Cup in Spain in 1982 . Honduras sat down against the teams from Haiti , Mexico . Cuba and Canada as well as the rivals from El Salvador and secured the first participation in a soccer world championship. In Spain, however, Honduras failed after the preliminary round.

Until the opening of the Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano in 1997 in San Pedro Sula , the Honduran national football team played their home games in the Estadio Nacional .
