The community is located in the lower Maggia valley . Neighboring municipalities are Maggia , Terre di Pedemonte , Orselina , Brione sopra Minusio , Mergoscia and Lavertezzo .

The municipality of Avegno Gordevio was created on April 20, 2008 from the merger of the previously independent municipalities of Avegno and Gordevio .
