Location of the municipality | |
Mergoscia , in the Alpine Lombard local dialect Mergosa, Mergesa [merˈgɔsa, merˈgesa] , is a political municipality in the district of Navegna , district of Locarno , in the Swiss canton of Ticino . It consists of the Ropiana, Busada, Benit and Lissoi factions.
geography
Mergoscia is located in the lower Verzasca Valley on the western flank of the valley above the Lago di Vogorno reservoir . It has its access via Contra and not, like the other villages in the Verzasca Valley, via Gordola .
Neighboring communities are Avegno , Brione sopra Minusio , Corippo , Gordevio , Gordola , Tenero-Contra and Vogorno .
history
The place was first mentioned in 1061 (copy from 1402) as Mergossia . The meaning of the place name is uncertain, perhaps there is a derivation from melica « pearl grass ».
Mergoscia separated politically from the Locarno countryside at the beginning of the 15th century and joined the Verzasca valley; In 1591 it became churchly independent from San Vittore in Muralto .
