Palagnèdra [palaˈñɛːdra] (in the Lombard dialect [palaˈɲɛdra parˈɲɛdri] ) is a district of the Ticino municipality of Centovalli . Until 2009 it formed an independent political municipality .

geography

The village lies on a terrace on the southern slope of the Centovalli , just before the Swiss-Italian border. The hamlets of Bordèi, Mòneto and Cresto-Monadèllo belonged to the former municipality.

The Lago di Palagnedra reservoir is located near the village . The dam was completed in 1952 and is 72 m high. The lake was created by the damming of the Melezza River .

History and economy

The village was first mentioned in writing in 1236, another early mention was made in 1379 as Pallagnidrio . The place was the administrative and ecclesiastical center of the Centovalli in the High Middle Ages, and the Church of San Michele was the mother church of the valley. In 1864 Palagnedra became its own political municipality.

From the end of the Middle Ages, seasonal emigration formed an important pillar of the economy: many citizens moved from Palagnedra to Tuscany in order to earn money from the 16th century, primarily as porters and from the 19th century as cooks . Several stately houses in the village still bear witness to the former prosperity. Thanks to the proximity to the border, smuggling also played an important role until the 1950s .

After 1970, the "base camp" of the Terra Vecchia therapeutic foundation was set up in the hamlet of Bordèi . At that time, the aim was to rebuild the town of the same name, which had since fallen into disrepair.

On October 25, 2009, Palagnedra merged with the municipalities of Borgnone and Intragna to form the new municipality of Centovalli .

In 2005, more than a third of all jobs were in the primary sector .
