The Lago di Palagnedra is an artificially created reservoir in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland .
location
The lake is located in Centovalli between the towns of Palagnedra and Camedo and dams the Melezza river . The catchment area is 137.7 km², the volume 4.26 million m³. The dam has a height of 72 meters and was completed in 1952.
use
The reservoir serves Maggia Kraftwerke AG as a compensation basin for its hydroelectric power station near Brissago . It collects the water that has already been used to generate electricity in the higher-lying power plant levels.
particularities
During the extreme floods in August 1978, a critical situation arose when heavy rainfall brought 2000 cubic meters of water per second into the lake. The flood relief between the top of the wall and the road leading over it to Palagnedra , designed for a maximum of 800 cubic meters per second, was blocked by driftwood . Side erosion developed. The flood subsided before the risk of rupture occurred.
In the following years a separate bridge was built over the valley for the road and the previous road over the dam was dismantled. Since then, the dam wall can be flooded over its entire width during floods.
The lake is divided by a second dam below the Borgnone settlement .
