Camedo is a district in the political municipality of Centovalli in the Melezza district , in the Locarno district of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland . Camedo is on the border with Piedmont , Italy .
geography
The village is located on a terrace on the southern slope of the Centovalli , about 600 m above sea level. M. Around twenty people live in the village all year round. Thanks to the Centovalli railway station and the " Via del Mercato " hiking trail, the former border village is now primarily a place of relaxation and a popular destination for hikers.
history
Camedo is mentioned as Camédum as early as 1297. After the division of the municipality of Centovalli in 1838, Camedo became a district of the then created Comune di Borgnone. This situation was remedied in 2009 when the municipality of Centovalli with its 19 districts was newly formed on April 8, 2009 with the consent of the State Council.
Camedo is known for the stories of smuggling, which are characterized by their geographical proximity to Italy and which were and are the first Swiss train station after the border.
In 1964 a small textile factory was built in Camedo.
Attractions
- In Camedo, the church is dedicated to San Lorenzo. It was probably built in the 17th century. In 1725 a Tuscan style portico was added. Above the fresco portal with the patron saint. In an altarpiece with San Lorenzo and an altarpiece from Scagliola from the mid-18th century, signed by Giuseppe Maria Pancaldi.
Economy and Infrastructure
- The Camedo station of the Ferrovie Autolinee Regionali Ticinesi (FART) is a station of the Locarno-Domodossola-Bahn ("Centovallina").
Camedo is the first station of the Centovalli Railway on Swiss soil when it comes from Italy.
