The Melezza is a 42 kilometer long right tributary of the Maggia . It flows through the uppermost part of the Valle Vigezzo in the Italian Piedmont as a male Melezzo orientale (eastern Melezzo) and then the Centovalli in the Swiss canton of Ticino as a female Melezza .

The Melezzo occidentale (western Melezzo) rises a little to the south- west and initially runs parallel before it bends west at Druogno , flows through the Valle Vigezzo and finally flows into the Toce at Domodossola .

At Palagnedra the Melezza is dammed up to the reservoir of Palagnedra . The dam was completed in 1952 and is 72 meters high.

course

The river rises at around 1880  m slm as Melezzo orientale directly at the Rifugio Regi on the Alpe Forno below the Pizzo la Scheggia in the municipality of Santa Maria Maggiore . At the beginning it flows steeply towards the confluence of the right-hand Valle Cortino and the left-hand Valle del Melezzo , which feed their water to the Melezzo at the Alpine settlement of Coier . At the bottom of the valley, it now forms a steep gorge flowing south-east between Monte Mater and La Cima . Between the villages of Santa Maria Maggiore and Toceno , it enters the Valle Vigezzo and turns east.

It runs briefly in the municipality of Craveggia and then takes in the village of Malesco first the Loana of about the same size on the right and then the Isornino on the left. This is now followed, mostly along the left bank, by the Ribellasca – Domodossola Strada Statale 337 della Val Vigezzo railway line . It passes Villette and turns northeast at Re below Monte Netto . This is followed by the Dissimo and Olgia fractions of the municipality of Re, which are located on the slope above the river, while the valley becomes increasingly narrow. At Olgia it forms a narrow gorge directly from the state border and marks it for around 1.8 kilometers as far as the Ribellasca fraction . At the Ticino hamlet of Ribellasca at the confluence of the Ri de Ribellasca (it. Rio di Spago) it passes over entirely to Swiss soil in the municipality of Centovalli and is now called Melezza.

It reaches the Centovalli and is now accompanied on the left by the Centovalli Railway and Hauptstrasse 560 . Shortly after the border it is dammed near Camedo to the Lago di Palagnedra . It leaves the reservoir between Verdasio and Palagnedra and flows through a deep, wooded gorge. It takes the Ri della Sella coming down from Bordei from the right and then passes the villages Corcapolo and Calezzo , which are on the left slope of the valley. At the end of the gorge between Intragna and Golino , the Isorno from the Onsernone Valley joins the most important tributary on the left, which at the same time crosses the municipal boundary to Terre di Pedemonte .

The Melezza now flows through a wide valley to the east and south in two arches past Cavigliano , Verscio and Tegna , on the right bank lies the municipality of Centovalli, then Losone . Here she changes the municipality several times, as the border follows the old course of the river. Finally it flows out at 210  m above sea level. M. at the foot of Monte Brè from right into the Maggia, which flows into Lake Maggiore shortly afterwards .
