Ponte Brolla is a town in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland , politically half of the municipality of Terre di Pedemonte (north of the road bridge) and half of the municipality of Locarno (south of the road bridge).

geography

It is located northwest of Locarno at the point where the Centovalli and the Valle Maggia branch. At Ponte Brolla, the Maggia leaves the Maggia valley through a narrow gorge with bizarre rock formations and joins the Melezza . A 33 m high single-arched stone bridge, which gave the place its name, spans the gorge. Until this was shut down in 1965, the Locarno-Ponte Brolla-Bignasco railway branched off from the Centovalli railway in Ponte Brolla .

Attractions

On the hill northwest of Ponte Brolla are the ruins of fortifications from prehistoric, late Roman and possibly medieval times. Today they are called “Castelliere” (formerly Castello). The hill offers a great view of the Maggia Valley, Centovalli and Lake Langensee. For this reason, another fortress was built into the rock interior during World War II, which can also be visited on request from those responsible.

To the north of the road bridge there is also a former steel bridge that has been converted into a hiking trail in the picturesque surroundings of the Locarno-Ponte Brolla-Bignasco railway over the Maggia.

Sports

To the north of the village is a rocky slope popular with climbers. The rocks of the gorge are the venue for European and world championships in cliff jumping .
