Gnesta train station

Gnesta is a small town ( tätort ) in the Swedish province County Södermanland and capital of the homonymous municipality . The place is between the cities of Södertälje and Nyköping on the railway line that connects Stockholm with Gothenburg .

history

Gnesta was first a village that was first mentioned in 1383. It is believed that the settlement existed much earlier. The leap in development came in the middle of the 19th century with the establishment of a train station on the new Västra stambana .

This station is the end of a section of the Stockholm S-Bahn . The station building was the model for a large number of Swedish train stations. The then chief architect of the Swedish railways , Adolf Wilhelm Edelsvärd, was of the opinion that smaller towns should have an attractive station building. As a result, various prototypes were built in ten locations. One of these models was erected in Gnesta and, following general approval, built similarly in many other places.
