Johann Michael Edler von Puchberg (born September 22, 1741 in Zwettl , Lower Austria , † January 21, 1822 in Vienna ) was a Viennese cloth merchant .

Life

He was born as the sixth child of the town clerk Johann Michael Puchberg and his wife Maria Catharina and spent his youth in Zwettl.

In 1768 he joined Michael Salliet's company in Vienna and within a short time he became managing director. On August 15, 1780, he married Salliet's widow Elisabeth, who died in 1784. Then he took over the company in September 1785 together with his brother Philipp Anton. In 1793 he was raised to the nobility by Emperor Franz II .

After 1800 he got into business difficulties and subsequently lost his fortune. In 1801 he had to file for bankruptcy and finally close his business on March 30, 1802.

Relationship with Mozart

Since 1773/74 he was a member of the Viennese Masonic lodge Zu den Drei Adler and through this came into contact with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , who in 1784 was accepted into the Lodge Zur Charity . Mozart called Puchberg an outright and true friend and often pleaded with him for money. At least 21 corresponding petition letters are known from the years 1788 to 1791. Puchberg complied with these requests, but lent Mozart less sums than he wanted.
