Gennadi Nikititsch Olonkin ( Russian Геннадий Никитич Олонкин ; * 1898 in Arkhangelsk Governorate , Russian Empire ; † September 1960 in Tromsø ) was a Russian-Norwegian radio operator and polar explorer.

Life

Olonkin was the only son among twelve children of a Norwegian mother and a Russian father.

From 1918 to 1925 he was a radio operator and mechanic on the ship Maud von Roald Amundsen . In 1926 he was awarded the Order of Saint Olav . Olonkin obtained Norwegian citizenship and worked for the Norske Meteorologisk Institut . From 1958 he was involved in the expansion of NATO's LORAN station on Jan Mayen , whose housing estate was later named after him.

Gennadi Olonkin was married and had a son and two daughters. The settlement of Olonkinbyen and Cape Olonkin on Jan Mayen are named in his honor.
