The BLS RABe 535 “Lötschberger” is a low-floor multiple unit from the manufacturer Bombardier Transportation for regional traffic. The vehicle was designed for use as the RegioExpress Bern - Brig via the Lötschberg tunnel at the request of the BLS . It is a direct descendant of the low-floor S-Bahn train BLS RABe 525 «NINA».

vehicle

The RABe 535 is a further development of the RABe 525, developed by the Aachen / Germany location and built by Bombardier Transportation . The four-part multiple unit has 85% low-floor share. There is a bogie under the driver's cabs of the two end cars , and three Jakobs bogies are located between the car bodies . The car bodies are made of lightweight steel, the driver's cabs are made of polyester composite.

The multiple unit is air-conditioned and offers 28 first-class seats and 143 second-class seats. Multifunctional compartments offer space for suitcases, bicycles and prams. In one of the end cars there is a handicapped accessible toilet with a closed toilet system.

technology

The traction equipment consists of two IGBT - converters with DC intermediate circuit and totally four asynchronous traction motors of 250 kW continuous power. It is a single-system equipment for the 15 kV / 16 2/3 Hz system common in Switzerland . The starting tractive effort is 123 kN compared to 105 kN for the «NINA».

The braking systems include an electrical recuperation brake , a magnetic rail brake , an ep brake and a spring-loaded parking brake . The latter two act on wheel disc brakes.

There is a Scharfenberg coupler on both sides , this allows a quick pull separation or coupling. The RABe 535 are technically compatible with the RABe 525, so that compositions with both types can be freely formed. This was very often necessary in 2009, because due to delays in delivery by the manufacturer and various technical faults, not enough RABe 535 were available.

commitment

With the commissioning of the Lötschberg base tunnel , the intercity trains from Bern to Valais no longer run on the Lötschberg mountain route since December 2007 . The development of the Kandertal and the Lötschberg southern ramp has since been ensured with the Regio-Express trains “Lötschberg” Bern – Spiez – Brig. Since the demand between the stations in Bern and Spiez is significantly higher than south of Spiez, a wing train concept is used. Coming from Bern, a triple-traction train is separated in Spiez; two multiple units continue to Brig , one to Zweisimmen . A four-part train can also be used at peak times, while a double Bern – Spiez train is sufficient at times of low load. The RABe 535 were designed for this traffic; The automatic coupling enables the train to be disconnected or connected quickly in Spiez. Compared to the previous train, the RABe 525 , the comfort for the travelers has been improved, as adventure travelers are also to be addressed here.

The 13 vehicles ordered in 2006 should have been used mainly for the RE Lötschberg (Bern) - Spiez - Brig and direction Zweisimmen from the timetable change on December 14, 2008 . Because the vehicle delivery was delayed, the planned services first had to be operated with older RABe 525 NINA. Due to capacity bottlenecks between Zollikofen and Bern, direct trains were only possible at off-peak times. On December 11, 2011, a third track from Zollikofen to Rütti was put into operation, since then all RE Lötschberg have been running to Bern.

Since December 2015, the RegioExpress route Bern – Langnau – Wolhusen – Lucerne has been running mostly - since December 2016 exclusively - Lötschberger compositions. The RE trains from Bern to Lucerne are combined in Wolhusen with the S7 from Langenthal and Willisau (RABe 525 NINA) and run coupled to Lucerne. In the opposite direction, the separation of RE and S7 also takes place in Wolhusen. Some of the Lötschberger vehicles are also used on the S6 Luzern – Wolhusen – Langnau.

Since the previous Kambly advertising, consisting of Re 465 and EW III , no longer runs on this route, the two trains 114 and 115 were stuck with Kambly advertising.

number

In 2008, BLS AG redeemed an option for eight further vehicles of this type in order to be able to cover the additional vehicle requirements. In 2011 another four trains were re-ordered, which were delivered by the end of 2012. Three replace other trains, the fourth covers peaks in demand.
