Mappo Morettina Tunnel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Galleria Mappo-Morettina (Eng. Mappo-Morettina-Tunnel) is a 5518 m long road tunnel  on the A13 in the Swiss canton of Ticino .

Its name comes from the two place names at the respective tunnel exits: Mappo at the eastern tunnel portal in the municipality of Tenero-Contra and Morettina at the western portal in the municipality of Locarno . The two places are relatively unknown even to residents of the region; the tunnel name "Galleria Mappo-Morettina" was not written on either of the two tunnel entrances for a long time. In the meantime this has been made up for. Since the tunnel completely crosses under the city of Locarno, the name "Locarno Tunnel" has become commonplace among the population from the start.

The single-tube tunnel opened on June 13, 1996 bypasses the municipalities of Minusio , Brione sopra Minusio , Orselina , Muralto and Locarno . The energy from the tunnel water  is used in the Mappo sports and recreation center .
