The BLS RABe 525 are local multiple units that were developed for the BLS Lötschbergbahn , now BLS AG . Due to the project name Ni ederflur- Na hverkehrszug the product was named "NINA".

history

The vehicle was developed and built by Vevey Technologies together with Bombardier-Talbot , Aachen (D), in the mid-1990s . The low-floor concept and bogie technology come largely from the Talent multiple unit , which was developed by Bombardier-Talbot in Aachen. The bogies have almost the same construction, which was only adapted for the NINA. The company Holec Machines & Apparaten - later Alstom / Traxis - from Ridderkerk (NL) was responsible for the electrical engineering , which, like Vevey Technologies at that time, belonged to the Begemann Group from the Netherlands. Since 2001 the company Vevey Technologies has been operating as Bombardier Transportation (Switzerland). The vehicles continued to be manufactured at the Villeneuve VD plant.

The "NINA" were offered as two- to four-part multiple units. They are driven by two two-axle motor bogies under the driver's cabs. Jakobs bogies are attached between the individual wagons . Like the Stadler GTW , the train is one of the lightweight vehicles. A three-part unit weighs only 78 tonnes empty (for comparison: a Re 465 “Lok 2000” weighs 84 tonnes). The maximum speed is 140 km / h.

NINA of the regional ps

In 1998 the BLS procured a first series of eight three-part units. These vehicles were retrofitted with a toilet. In 2000, a reorder for six vehicles followed, followed by a third series of 18 vehicles, which were ordered at the end of 2002. With the fourth order for four vehicles placed in 2003, the stock increased to a total of 36 units. In order to increase the seating capacity, the thirteen RABe 525 015 to 027 were extended by an intermediate car each to form four-part multiple units. From 2009 the NINA received air conditioning.

The second order from BLS was also followed by Transports de Martigny et Régions (TMR) and Transports Régionaux Neuchâtelois (TRN). The TMR procured three units (RABe 527 511-513) that were in the canton of Valais on behalf of the Regionalps and were taken over by this company in 2009. The TRN procured two NINAs (RABe 527 321–322), which were taken over by the BLS in the following years according to the agreement concluded at the end of 2007. RABe 527 322 had been with the BLS since the beginning of 2008 and was added to the BLS portfolio as RABe 525 038 at the end of September 2008; For the opening of the Westside shopping center in Bern , the vehicle was covered accordingly. After the removal of this advertisement, the multiple unit drove all in white with a red stripe on the front. This unit was sold to the Regionalps after the reorder had been delivered by Lötschbergers . RABe 525 037 was also added to the BLS portfolio at the beginning of August 2009. This NINA has been running in the colors of Login Vocational Training since the beginning of October 2009 and was opened on October 17, 2009 at Langnau i. E. baptized. In May 2016, the RABe 525 037 was modernized and lost its advertising. Shortly after delivery, RABe 525 036 received an advertising paint for the Zentrum Paul Klee . This unit has been promoting the Berner Zeitung since 2011 . Also in 2011 RABe 525 035 received an advertising sticker for the musical Alperose . This was removed in summer 2014. RABe 525 014 has been promoting Bern's local mountain, Gurten , since April 4, 2013 . Since mid-May 2020 there has been another NINA with advertising for the login vocational training , this time it is RABe 525 010.

On December 24, 2010 the NINA RABe 525 031 of the BLS caught fire in Müntschemier and burned out almost completely. The box structure was so badly damaged that the multiple unit had to be broken off. Another Lötschberger (RABe 535) was procured as a replacement in 2012 .

In 2012 the BLS sold the NINA 38 to the Regionalps. In the course of registration in the National Rolling Stock Register (NVR), the other three RA trains received TSI numbers following the BLS trains, ie 525 039-041.

Two BLS-NINA after the refit

From 2015 to 2019, BLS modernized its entire Nina fleet. 1st class will no longer be in the high-floor compartment, but will be moved to the low-floor area. In addition, the lighting is adjusted so that all compartments are well lit. The toilets have also been modified slightly. In 2nd class, a standing area will be set up and the interior and exterior colors of the vehicles will be standardized so that all trains will have the same design. The refit was completed in June 2019.

The Ninas are used on the S5 and S44 of the Bern S-Bahn as well as on the S6 and S7 of the Lucerne S-Bahn and various regional lines of the BLS. Regionalps uses them on the Saint Bernard Express.

Baptismal name

The BLS first named the NINA after the waters in its catchment area. Later, with "Wankdorf", a stop was added and with " Konolfingen " a place with a coat of arms was used for the first time. After the refit, two more NINAs were christened with the coat of arms of places.

Further development

For use as RegioExpress on the Lötschberg line from the end of 2008, BLS ordered thirteen panorama multiple units from Bombardier under the project name PaNINA . They are largely based on the NINA, but have more comfortable features. The commissioning of the first series was accompanied by problems and happened too late. The second series could be put into operation by spring 2010, and by 2012 the series was increased to 25 vehicles with a third order.
