Vittorio De Seta
Vittorio De Seta (born October 15, 1923 in Palermo , † November 28, 2011 in Sellia Marina ) was an Italian screenwriter and film director .
Life
De Seta was born to a wealthy family. He broke off studying architecture in Rome to devote himself entirely to filming. Between 1954 and 1959 he made ten short documentaries , the first seven of which describe everyday life in Sicily . Three other documentaries were made in Sardinia and Calabria .
The first long documentary Banditi a Orgosolo was made in Sardinia in 1960. Together with the films by Pier Paolo Pasolini , it triggered a second wave of Italian neorealism and was awarded a prize at the Venice International Film Festival in 1961 .
In the following years, De Seta also devoted himself to other genres until he returned to documentary film in 1980. His last film Lettere dal Sahara was also awarded at the Venice International Film Festival.
De Seta last lived in Rome and Sicily.
