Malloy becomes depressed and drinks too much alcohol. He goes to a clinic in Wyoming that mainly treats law enforcement officers. The wanted murderer kills a patient and takes on his identity in order to be able to come to the clinic. There are more murders there later.
Since a snowstorm cuts off the clinic from the outside world, Malloy fights the killer under adverse conditions. Malloy finds out through extensive research that only Slater can be the murderer and so begins his fight against him. In the end, however, Malloy can assert himself against him and takes revenge on him for the murder of his great love Mary. In the final scene, Malloy hangs a chain with a ring, which was intended for the marriage proposal to Mary, on the branch of a tree and thus closes the story of the murder.
