The bounty hunter Lewis Gates is a widower. He is tasked with finding three armed prisoners, who were fleeing in the woods of Montana . He only finds clues to the fugitives who pose riddles.

Lewis and anthropologist Lillian Diane Sloan work together to explore the woods and find a settlement. The Indians were displaced from their natural habitat by European settlers a hundred years ago. Sloan and Gates are becoming increasingly accepted by the Indians.

Sheriff Deegan, former father-in-law of Gates, leads a detachment that enters the wilderness. Gates fears that the Indians could be attacked again.

Reviews

Peter Stack criticized the "bland" script in the San Francisco Chronicle (September 8, 1995); the film is still entertaining. The "grainy" acting Berenger plays "pleasant", Hershey seems implausible in her role.

James Berardinelli wrote that the film was "surprisingly entertaining" even though the plot was designed "politically correct". The critic found the narration of an off-voice "extremely irritating" and "redundant". The message of the film is that when people find what they have been looking for all their lives, they are ready to take risks.

Rita Kempley wrote in the Washington Post (September 12, 1995) that Gates and Sloan's relationship, like all of the plot and dialogue, was "clichéd".

backgrounds

The film was shot in Mexico and Canada . The box office grossing in the US was 7.4 million US dollars .
