StuDocu is a crowdsourcing - web platform for students where they learn online and exchange study material. StuDocu is primarily used for materials such as book summaries, lecture notes, and exam questions. Their business model is based on a subscription to premium documents.
history
StuDocu was founded in 2013 by four students from the Technical University of Delft as StudeerSnel.nl, the Dutch version of the website. After realizing that many useful study materials were only available to a few well-connected students, they created an open platform that is accessible to everyone.
In 2014, StuDocu received an investment of 125,000 euros from a “business angel”, the founder of the Dutch social media platform Hyves , Koen Kam. In 2015, Peak Capital and Point Nine Capital also invested 1.35 million euros. In 2016, StuDocu was nominated for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
Controversy
StuDocu enables users to upload old exams from their university courses . In most cases, the universities own the copyright to these documents, which is why the removal of these affected documents is often requested. In 2014, almost all students on a course at the University of Groningen achieved 10 out of 10 points in an exam because the exam was available on StuDocu.
