George Langelaan

George Langelaan (born January 19, 1908 in Paris ; died February 9, 1972 ) was a Franco-British novelist and journalist , writer of espionage , horror and science fiction stories. He is best known as the author of the SF short story Die Fliege, which has been filmed several times . During the Second World War he was a British secret agent .

Life

Georges Langelaan's father was British of Dutch descent who worked for the continental edition of the Daily Mail and his mother was French. At the beginning of the Second World War, Langelaan was recruited from the France division of the Special Operations Executive , an organization of the British secret service, for operations in occupied France. In September 1941 he parachuted over France, but was arrested by the French police in October and imprisoned in the Mauzac POW camp in the Dordogne . In 1944 he was liberated by British troops and took part with them in the liberation of Paris .

After the war he stayed for a long time in the USA, where his story The Fly appeared in the June issue of Playboy in 1957 . After moving to France in the early 1960s, where he worked as a journalist for news agencies and correspondent for the New York Times , following his interest in the extraordinary and the paranormal, he began to publish on a larger scale in French fantastic stories that appeared in three edited volumes. which were also translated into German. He also wrote articles for the magazine Planète , its offshoot Plexus , and the magazine Pilote . In addition to his fiction work, he published several books about his experience as an agent in World War II.

In his last years he lived with his wife in Mesnil-Saint-Denis ( Yvelines ). Langelaan died in 1972 at the age of 64.
