Rolf Giesen

Rolf Giesen (born July 4, 1953 in Moers ) is a German film scholar , film journalist and non-fiction author . He is one of the leading German specialists in fantastic films , animated films and horror films , through which he won the popular title “Dr. Horror ”received.

Life

Rolf Giesen studied sociology , psychology and ancient history at the Free University of Berlin and received his doctorate in 1979 with a dissertation on the fantastic film. phil. A topic that became his life's work. He has published numerous articles and books about the cinema of the fantastic - from fantasy films , science fiction films and horror films to the various techniques of animation , which he dealt with particularly intensively. From 1982 to 1984 he was chairman of the German Trickfilmverband eV and organized drawing film festivals. More recently, Giesen has also dealt with the propaganda films of the Third Reich .

Giesen is an employee of the Berlin Film Museum - Deutsche Kinemathek - and there director of a collection of animated films named after him. The Rolf Giesen Collection of the Deutsche Kinemathek Berlin Foundation is considered to be one of the best collections on the subject of film fantasy in Europe. Giesen also designed the permanent exhibition “ Artificial Worlds ” at the Berlin Film Museum, which focuses on the life's work of the animated film maker Ray Harryhausen . Other exhibitions organized by Giesen were “ Asterix , Mickey Mouse & Co. ” (1986) and “ Cinefantastic ”. He also contributed the scripts for the animated film Die Digedags in Grauer Vorzeit (1999) and the television cartoon series The Neverending Story (1996). He acted as a consultant for the films Lorenz in the Land of Liars (1997) and Lauras Stern (2004) and as a production supervisor for Asterix - Operation Hinkelstein (1989).

In addition to teaching assignments at various universities, technical colleges and film academies, Giesen also taught as an honorary professor at the German Film School for digital production . He is an Associate Professor at Peking University , where he lectured in 2007. As “Dr. Horror ”, Rolf Giesen recorded a record with the group“ Niagara ”in the early 1980s. He is a member of the Visual Effects Society in Los Angeles . Giesen lives and works in Berlin and Beijing.
