Awkwardly in love (Original title: The Switch ) is an American comedy film directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck from 2010. It is based on the short story Baster by Jeffrey Eugenides .

action

The professionally successful Kassie, 40 and single , decides to become pregnant. She reveals this plan to her best friend Wally, a neurotic , pessimistic hypochondriac . Wally is not very enthusiastic, especially since Kassie rejects him as a sperm donor because she does not want to have neurotic children. However, she doesn't want to turn to a sperm bank either , because she wants to personally select and get to know the sperm donor. Wally and Kassie get upset and they both decide to take a friendship break.

A little later, Wally finds Kassie's invitation to an “insemination party” - Kassie has found a suitable sperm donor. It is the married university professor Roland. As a passionate athlete and blond optimist, he is the exact opposite of Wally, who promptly gets drunk at Kassie's party. It is planned that Cassia will be impregnated by Roland's semen directly at the party. In Kassie's bathroom, Wally accidentally flushes Roland's semen in the sink and replaces it with his. The next day he wakes up hungover and can't remember anything. A little later, Kassie informs him that she is finally pregnant. She moves away from New York to let her child grow up with her parents in a family circle.

Seven years later, contact between Wally and Kassie is almost broken. She had a son, Sebastian, who is now almost six years old. Kassie now takes another job in New York and moves back to the big city. She wants to see Wally again, but above all she wants to establish contact with Roland, the supposed father of the child, who has since divorced his wife.

Wally meets Sebastian for the first time, a neurotic and closed but intelligent boy who collects picture frames and puts together his own extended family from the prefabricated photos of the frames. Wally develops a relationship with him and soon notices that the boy is essentially the same. It wasn't until he talked to his best friend Leonard, whom Wally went to drunk after Kassie's party seven years ago, that he realized that Sebastian was his son. He wants to tell Kassie the truth, but she is intensifying a relationship with Roland that Sebastian doesn't like. Only when Roland Kassie wants to propose marriage does Wally confess his fatherhood to her and confess his love to her. She slaps him and forbids him any contact with her and Sebastian.

Some time later she's waiting in front of his office: She left Roland because he wasn't like Wally. She allows Wally to contact Sebastian and finally accepts his marriage proposal with a "probably". Sebastian later celebrates his eighth birthday. Wally and Kassie got married and Sebastian now uses the picture frames to fill them with photos of his own family.

criticism

Cinema described Cumbersome in love as “a thoroughly lovable comedy about the trials and tribulations of having children. The directors Will Speck and Josh Gordon combine puns , slapstick and serious feelings in a carefree, if not overly original romance. [...] Conclusion: Solid Jennifer Aniston comedy with serious nuances. "
