Tenderness is an American psychological thriller directed by John Polson and starring Jon Foster , Sophie Traub , Russell Crowe and Laura Dern from 2009. The film is based on the novel by Robert Cormier .
action
Lori ( Sophie Traub ) is an unhappy 15-year-old who lives in Buffalo with her single mother . She receives sexual advances from several men, including her supermarket boss and her mother's boyfriend, Gary ( Michael Kelly ). Eric Komenko ( Jon Foster ) is an 18-year-old boy who killed his parents. While in the juvenile detention center, Komenko often receives visits from Lieutenant Cristofuoro ( Russell Crowe ), the detective who arrested him. Cristofuoro is convinced: Komenko is a psychopath who killed two teenage girls before killing his parents and that he would kill again. After Eric is released from juvenile detention center, he lives with his aunt. His release drew some media attention, which Lori caught and made so curious that she looked for Eric in his house. When it suddenly starts raining, she sits down on the back seats of Eric's Volvo 740 (which actually belongs to his aunt) to protect herself from the rain and falls asleep.
Eric has phone, with Maria, whom he met in jail for a weekend at a theme park in Albany agreed.
When Eric is on his way to the amusement park, Lori is still sleeping under a blanket in the back of the station wagon. When she wakes up and Eric suddenly sees her appear, he is so frightened that he throws the steering wheel, the car turns on its own axis and almost collides with other cars. While the two are trying to calm down, the highway police appear. In order to avoid problems, Lori lies to the Asian police officer whom she later makes fun of. Reluctantly, Eric allows Lori to continue the journey with him.
She later tells him that she saw him kiss a girl down by the river just before he murdered his parents. Eric now knows that she saw him with the girl whom he suffocated in his first unsolved murder and plans several times to kill Lori. Each plan is thwarted by various circumstances. In the last attempt he has to realize that Lori is tired of life and is striving for death anyway.
At the amusement park, Lori has to get along without Eric, to whom she has meanwhile made clear sexual advances. As she goes on a roller coaster, she sees from above that the meeting with Maria, the girl Eric had agreed to meet, was just a trap for Cristofuoro. There are police officers hidden around the somewhat secluded square to which Maria Eric leads. Lori tries loudly to warn Eric. The detective was trying to find Eric so he could be stopped and not murder again. Because Cristofuoro has no evidence, he has to let Eric go. Lori is now warned about Eric's nature. The two drive on together. When Eric and Lori take a boat trip on a lake, Lori almost capsizes the boat. Then she suddenly drops into the water, even though she is not a swimmer. Eric tries to save her, but to no avail. When he can pull her out of the water, Lori is already dead. He is deeply affected, probably because a strange kind of relationship had developed between him and the girl.
Eric is taken to a detention center. Lieutenant Cristofuoro is interrogating him. Although the detective admits he believes Eric's explanation, he sticks to his opinion that Eric belongs in prison and that Lori's death is reason enough to see him locked up.

criticism
"The feature film 'Tenderness - On the Trail of the Killer' deliberately defies the conventions of serial killer films by largely dispensing with ostensible action and violence [...]"
“A childish-innocent-looking killer, a precocious neglected tennis brat and a not completely fresh cop who vacillates between caring and disillusionment - this trio sends director John Polson (Hide And Seek, Swimfan) on an ominous journey in 'Tenderness' through an America that seems damaged through and through. The situation between the characters is constantly threatening to escalate, behind their serene façade, hard-pressed longings shimmer again and again. With the help of an excellent cast, Polson brings the conflicting feelings and the deep-seated desire for tenderness into a coherent psychodrama and an impressive painting of the soul. "
