He first played on stages in New York and made his Broadway debut in a supporting role in the comedy A Cook for Mr. General in 1961 , in which Dustin Hoffman also starred . However, this would remain his only Broadway production. In 1966 he moved to California to seek his fortune as a film and television actor. He quickly received guest roles in various television series, for example, in the same year he was seen in an episode of Raumschiff Enterprise as an unnamed member of the security department. In contrast, he had feature film roles less often; Among other things, he appeared in 1968 in small supporting roles in the agent thriller Ice Station Zebra alongside Rock Hudson and in the western Hang him up next to Clint Eastwood . In 1976 he starred alongside John Wayne in an uncredited supporting role in The Last Sniper .

On television, Goldsmith remained a busy actor from the mid-1960s through the late 1980s. He was to be seen as a guest star in numerous successful series formats, in the 1960s among others in Rauchende Colts , Auf der Flucht and Hawaii Five-Zero , in the 1970s among others in Cobra Take Over , The Streets of San Francisco and Three Angels for Charlie , as well as in the 1980s in The A-Team , Knight Rider and MacGyver , among others . By the early 1990s, Goldsmith withdrew almost entirely from the acting business. Between 2007 and 2012 he appeared in a nationwide US television campaign for Dos Equis beer. An image from the ad then became a popular internet phenomenon known as The Most Interesting Man in the World .
