action
Rachel and Richard Luckman are unable to have children despite several attempts. They want to adopt the future child of the pregnant Wanda LeFauve, who answers an advertisement. LeFauve lives in a trailer and already has four children; she has no money to raise another child.
Wanda's husband Al hopes to get more and more money from the Luckmans. Among other things, he demands that the Luckmans buy his family a new car. There are often arguments about it. Finally, Al agrees to sign the necessary documents without any further conditions.
There are complications during childbirth which can result in brain damage in the child. Rachel and Richard discuss it; Rachel still wants to take the child while her husband is against it. The couple's lawyer tells about another child of a healthy young woman who comes from a college graduate. Eventually the Luckmans leave without the child. Richard Luckman returns the baby basket he bought earlier at the airport.
Wanda LeFauve doesn't want to keep her newborn daughter either. The film ends with the close-up of the crying baby lying in the hospital.
