Life

Terence Allen was born in Kansas, but grew up in Lubbock , Texas - the birthplace of Buddy Holly . At a very young age he rebelled against the adult world and his environment through artistic activity: he painted, wrote and played music. His father, Fletcher "Sled" Allen, a former nationally known baseball professional and manager, owned an event hall, in which primarily combat events were held. On Friday evenings there were dancing events for blacks, on Saturdays for whites. The young Terry Allen got his first job there and experienced these dance events with blues and country music: On Fridays, musicians like Jimmy Reed , BB King and T-Bone Walker played , on Saturdays and the like. a. Hank Williams , Ernest Tubb , Little Jimmy Dickens or Minnie Pearl . Allen was already hearing this music as a six-year-old while he was selling ice cream and lemon wedges to the guests, with which they secretly refined the drinks they had brought with them. Due to this early influence, he soon began to write songs - and on his first appearance at a high school festival, he performed a composition of his own that was related to his job: Roman Orgy . It wasn't just any high school, but Monterey High School in Lubbock, which was attended by Butch Hancock , Jimmie Dale Gilmore , Joe Ely , Jo Harvey Allen, and Jo Carol Pierce at the time. With the actress and musician Jo Harvey Allen, who z. B. participated in Green Tomatoes , the musician and artist has been married since 1961; today they have two grandchildren.

After graduating, Allen studied architecture at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles. After returning to Lubbock, he concentrated on his artistic activities. As early as 1966 he began to establish himself as a musician and visual artist. Today, apart from music, his artistic work includes numerous paintings, drawings, sculptures, videos, performances and installations. Allen wrote numerous songs, but did not release his first record until 1975. The successor appeared in 1979 - but the material had already been partially published by other artists, such as the song New Delhi Freight Train 1977 by Little Feat . This double album , Lubbock (On Everything) , is now classified as "one of the finest country records of all time." See also album reviews in Erlewine, Michael u. a. : All Music Guide to Country , San Francisco, California: Miller Freemann Books, 1999, p. 7. With Amarillo Highway and Truckloads of Art , this album provided two classics of Texan country music that almost every country band in the state has in their program. Allen continued to release albums every two to three years for the next decade and a half. In 1986, Allen was involved with his wife, Jo Harvey Allen, on the soundtrack of the David Byrne film True Stories . Terry Allen also wrote many songs for films and plays, including a. the soundtrack to the film Baby Blues . His songs have been recorded by a huge list of musicians from many backgrounds. These include u. a. Bobby Bare , Guy Clark , Robert Earl Keen , David Byrne, Doug Sahm , Ricky Nelson , Cracker and Lucinda Williams . Allen himself does not like to be called a country musician: "If someone says to me that I am a country musician, I ask back: which country ?"

As an artist, Allen received several important awards and grants, including a. 1986 from Guggenheim and 1988 from the National Endowment for the Arts . His works are exhibited in numerous galleries and museums, such as B. at the Paule Anglim Gallery in San Francisco, the Denver Institute of Arts and even the New York Museum of Modern Art. His work Trees is on the campus of the University of San Diego , California . Allen is also regularly represented at international art exhibitions - in São Paulo , Paris and Sydney .

As an author, Allen wrote texts for radio and theater; there he also works as a director. In 2005 his multimedia play Dugout was published as a book. Terry Allen now lives primarily in Santa Fe , New Mexico , but also has a home in Marfa , Texas.

In 1997, Allen was inducted into the Buddy Holly Walk of Fame in Lubbock.
